Holding Onto Death

Holding Onto Death

You are holding their hand,
staring into their face
when suddenly, they've gone!
Vanished!

            No trace!

Their eyes have gone dull.
Who turned out their light?
You stare in horror,
start shaking in fright.

Screams tear your throat.
Did a sound pass your lips?
Your lungs are compressed,
your heart in vice-grips.

How does it feel
to watch someone die?
Would you be able to weep?
Would you be able to cry?

The face is so lifeless.
The hand is of lead.
How does it feel
to hold someone dead?
