Ten Beginner Tips for Taking Photographs

  1. Keep your horizon straight

  2. Don’t have trees, signposts etc “growing” out of people’s heads

  3. Try not to have white or light things on the edge of a dark image.

  4. If it is meant to be symmetrical, photograph it from dead center.

  5. Try and keep some detail in the very white and very black parts of an image.

  6. If something is moving, leave some space on the side of the image for it to “move into”.

  7. Think about your image, and compose it, before you click it.

  8. Don’t apologise for using your phone, or a “lesser” camera. The best camera is the one you have with you.

  9. If you like the shot, take it! You may regret it later if you don’t take the shot.

  10. If you are not shooting deliberately out of focus, like ICM, make damn sure you keep it in focus!
