On the 29th November 2018 was the annual Open PDI competition for the season. Open means anything goes, and so images do not have to be realistic. Any amount of fiddling and diddling on images… way to go! I love it!
This was an opportunity for me to enter one of my favourite images. It is a portrait image, but, since it is creatively treated, I can’t enter it into the club portrait competition. I created it last season but was so frustrated not to be able to use it in the portraits competition, but was determined to use it to compete with, one way or another. I then considered keeping it for a panel of images, but I never really wanted to dilute it within a panel.
It is really scary entering an image that you love dearly into a competition. It is like holding up your beloved child only to invite someone point out all of the flaws. I really did NOT want to crash and burn with this image. When I had the idea for it, it actually came out a millions times better than I hoped. I worked with a model called Dave C, a.k.a. Big Dog and we were doing an entirely different style of shoot, but when I got my brainstorm and asked Dave for this pose, he gladly complied.
Dave is a really lovely man, one of the nicest I have ever met. This image is creative and reflects how Dave can get into character. He is not in any way aged like this image is. He is a very dashing gentleman. I have linked his portfolio above for you to have a look at.
Well, as for this image, I took my courage in my hands, and entered the image for all the world to see. It won me a Highly Commended! I can’t even begin to say how delighted I was!
