The competition season is upon us again! The heat is on!
The first competition that I have entered this season really knocked my socks off. The quality of images was so great that I firmly believed that I had no hope in hell of getting anywhere this season, in my new group. Being in group A, I knew it was going to be impossible to be placed in. And, in the first colour PDI competition, I got nowhere.
When the monochrome print competition came around, I thought to myself, ‘Well, I am not going to get anywhere anyway, so what the hell…!’ and so I put in one of my weird images, rather than one I thought would be “acceptable”. Don’t get me wrong, I really, really love the image, I just didn’t think it would do well in a camera club competition. Camera club competition judges usually say one thing or another, but generally they choose a specific style of image, and my image definitely did not fit in with the norm.
When it came time for my image to be judged, I thought, ‘Oh, crap! Here we go…’ and I expected to get slated for it. Imagine my surprise when the judge did not point out any flaws. I was so relieved. He actually kept it back for consideration. When they were choosing the winners, commended etc, afterwards, my image got lumped together with a bunch of other images. I thought I was out of the running. I did sort of hold out a hope though, that it might be in a pile of commended or something, but when the commended were called and my image wasn’t in there, I was like, oh well, at least it didn’t get torn to pieces by the judges comments, and it did get held back for consideration, which is amazing.
When it came time to hear who had first place, I nearly fell off my chair! There it was! My image, Nightcrawler, with my lovely model, Cariad Celis! I could NOT stop ginning like a lunatic.
Afterwards the judge came up to me and all he said was, ‘Interesting image…’
Ha, ha, ha! I loved that comment!
